Richard Mille Unveils Summer RM 65-01 in Light Blue and Dark Yellow
In the world of haute horlogerie, the split-seconds chronograph holds a special place. It features not just one central chronograph second hand, but two, which can be started and stopped simultaneously and separately in order to time two separate events within the same sequence – such as the number of laps during a race or two separate runners crossing the finish line. This extra practicality and mechanical complexity compared to a standard chronograph makes the split-seconds chronograph one of the most prestigious sports complications. Now, Richard Mille has released their latest creation, the RM 65-01 Split-Seconds Chronograph in Light Blue and Dark Yellow Quartz TPT.
At first glance, these might be my favorite Richard Mille watches so far this year. That makes sense, as they are simply colored versions of my favorite grey Quartz TPT edition from last year. Their 44.5mx 49.94mm x 16.1mm Quartz TPT cases now come in light blue and vibrant yellow.
The light hue of the RM 65-01 Light Blue Edition is very attractive, just like the sky. Plus, paired with the dark blue crown guard and dial decorations and orange pushers and chronograph hands, it closely resembles a certain iconic racing livery that rose in the 60s and 70s. In contrast, the Dark Yellow Edition is a dark canary with light blue accents. It has less of a sporty connection, but feels bright and perfect for summer. As for the significance of them being made of Quartz TPT, you can read all about the material here.
Next we come to the mechanics of this watch, which is identical to the existing RM 65-01 split-seconds chronograph. It is powered by the RMAC4 automatic movement, which has a 60-hour power reserve and features a split-seconds chronograph, 30-minute counter, 12-hour counter, small seconds, date and function selector – all of which can be viewed through a partially skeletonized display.
While these new versions of the RM 65-01 Split-Seconds Chronograph in light blue and dark yellow ultimately come down to new colorways in a mature collection, I think the combination of sporty design and bright colors is a perfect example of what RM excels at. Summer and sports are both fun concepts, so it’s fitting that for a sports watch as crazy as this one, it leans into that.
